It's time for an update to how we handle time! Now that we are a couple days into the first season of this year, I'll explain how our flow of time will now work. We will be keeping double time, but our time will be more fluid. Essentially, from here on, you will be allowed to back date threads.

All threads from here on out will need to have a date AND time listed in the thread title. This will allow users to see exactly when a thread occurred.

Previously, if you posted a new thread, the time and date that thread was posted was the time in which that event was happening. We are altering the rules regarding timelines to allow you to backdate threads for any date in the current year. (This is Year 3.) So this year started on 8.29.19. You may date a thread from the current date backward to the first day of the year. So as today is 8/31/19, you may date a thread for any date between 8/29/19 and 8.31.19. You may not date threads forward.

So as the year progresses, you will be able to date threads for any time that has already passed in the year, but you must be careful not to break your own character's timelines. The best way to track a character's timeline is to go to their profile and click the button on it labelled "Thread Log". It shows every thread the character has ever participated in. Likewise, events that would break your timelines should also be carefully monitored. So, for example, if I posted a thread for a character dated for today in the desert, it would break the timeline if I posted a thread dated for the 29th in which they ended up dying.

Excessively breaking your own timelines or other characters' timelines is frowned upon and if done consistently, Staff may intervene. Tomorrow I will be instituting changes to leader logs and pregnancies that reflect these changes, so keep an eye out! Please DM or PM a staffer if you have any questions.

[M] vaguely, for implications :3

Being defeated is a rather easy thing to do. There are many ways to do it, many ways to go about it. It does not have to be organized, for one thing, which already opens up a ton of possibilities for how it can be done. But that doesn't mean it can't be organized either, which opens up the other branch of possibilities. The methods of being defeated are as plentiful as the branches on one gigantic redwood tree, or perhaps a dozen, or maybe even a forest of them. A forest of defeat.

For a fox like Colbert, every walk down every road was one through the gates of trial, the mine field of failure, and through the weeping, wimbling forest of defeat. It went on for miles, in many directions, and held a vast array of colors and shapes and sizes to peruse through.

An outsider might assume Colbert liked this forest, for he seemed to occupy it nigh constantly. Page through his records of history and you'll find that every attempt he has made has led to something lost. In trying for freedom, he lost a family, home, shelter, and somewhat normal life -- the purpose of his freedom ended up defeated. In trying for a somewhat normal life, he was met with watching murder and facing it down himself. The purpose of his search for normality was permanently defeated. In trying to accept his role in life, he was met with irony, devastation, and the impossible task of protecting innocent lives from the devil himself. Acceptance was defeated.

Everywhere he tried, he failed. Others failed as well, so it seemed no one was there to make up for his pitiful existence. All that was really left appeared to be how much he could try and fail to do. Maybe when everything was gone he could finally justify the Last Fall. Kimagure was locked away, for once the person in distress. Dragon, the assumed hero, had already appeared to fail in protecting her adoptive daughters. Colbert was a failure from the start. Karama, even that spitfire hothead of a woman, even she had been... defeated. Kuruan as well, and that should not have been so surprising, since she had likely been "broken in" by Shikikan a long time ago.

Colbert had once tried to hold on to hope, and yet he was now starting to fail at that, too. Everywhere he looked. Everywhere he went. What made the burns worse was when Colbert had thought his trying had succeeded. Little did he know it was only a setup for further heartbreak.

So here he was now, wandering this vibrant forest of defeat. The rainbow colors splattered haphazardly about did not impress the man who only saw in shades of grey. It wasn't that he couldn't marvel. It was more so that he was afraid to. More so that he was too tired to, too delirious with rage that would not subside. Too hungry, perhaps.

And he was here because he wanted to try again. For something else. Something that it wouldn't hurt to fail at until much later, when he would be thinking "Well darn, I wish I'd had some luck there. Or some better skill." You see, Colbert hadn't forgotten his original assignment. Once upon a time, he'd been training to be a knowledge seeker rather than a death seeker. In some cyclical, convoluted way, his hope still clung to him and begged him to try, at least at that. And see if he would fail, which, of course he would. But even though his trying was out of a sense of need for absolute destitution, it was also, un-admittedly, out of that last sense of hope.

The most stubborn thing of all.

He would search through the roots and dirt and trees, around the rainbows and the fallen leaves. He would see what he would, or would not, find.

Digging little fox-holes in the ground here and there to extend the search to 3-dimensional levels, the up and the down (more so the down), rather than just the north, south, east, and west, Colbert eventually found-- no, he eventually hit something.

Something squishy, but not necessarily soft. He kept digging around it until he could see it. Leather? Leather! Tan, but dirty. It wasn't that deep in the ground. Had someone buried it here? Excited as a pirate is for their buried treasure, Colbert dug more. Were there patterns on this thing? What was it, a bag? An article of clothing? He kept digging around it until it could be free.

Loose, soon enough, Colbert pulled it out of the ground with relative ease. Again, it wasn't buried that deep at all. Moist earth clung to it like a legion of burrs to a single pelt. A rectangular leather satchel was rested before Colbert's paws. He pawed off and shook some of the dirt before grabbing the single leather strap in the jaw and flinging it around to shake it off some more. He knew it wouldn't completely work, since the dirt was wet, and he ought to wait until it dried. But, it'd do for now.

Colbert thought for a moment before he got to the obvious next-action of opening it. It had felt very light but who knows, perhaps there was something very light in there and he hadn't noticed from swinging it around. He hadn't felt anything when pawing the dirt away but once again, pawing and swinging in these scenarios were oft careless actions.

There could be something inside. If it was there, should he take it? If someone else buried this, wouldn't it have meant that it was theirs? What if it was runestones? Food? A pelt of some kinds? Feathers? Seeds? There could be a myriad of things in this satchel here, because even a million things were small and light enough, possibly. And just as many could be useful in some way. But there was the dilemma, even if it could help him, was it his to take? A younger Colbert wouldn't have even thought it a dilemma; of course not! A satchel, with items, buried under the ground? It's somebody else's, and he should try to return it! But an older Colbert knew better, and needed better. It could've been some kind of gift to him, from the Gods. Like the flower stud earring in his ear right now. It could've been a gift from fate: an unguarded pouch of rewards, or merely an unguarded pouch for the taking, it could be of great use to Colbert either way.

These were desperate times, weren't they? Once before, Colbert would've found the complacence in being alright with potential stealing to be disgusting and rude. And now he was considering it himself. Served him right to be executed like a true criminal then, didn't it? Despite his insides feeling the dubious and undoubtable sense of "wrong" at the notion of bringing innocent creatures unnecessary pain, Colbert resigned himself to a decision: he was scum, and if he was inclined to be scum, he might as well just dive in headfirst. Hadn't he been alright with practically thieving from nature anyways? In a sense that's what he used to do.

The lines of accepting a gift and stealing a treasure blurred here, but Colbert made his choice regardless.

He opened the satchel. Luckily, the decision of whether to keep or potentially steal, or to try to give back, return, or leave any treasures there. Colbert immediately felt a level of relief, but began to look back on his would-be decision anyways. It felt wrong that he would've been okay with it. He didn't like it, but he also didn't want to care. It was conflicting to say the least.

Colbert slipped on the satchel. Interestingly, it fit perfectly. In fact, this was quite an odd discovery, considering the fact that Colbert was impeccably small, even for a fox. It didn't drag, it hung on tight, and there was a reasonable amount of space in there. Colbert immediately thought of the perfect fit. More like fits. Runestones.

That was strange. The perfect device for the very usage he'd sought to fail at. It was almost like for once, he'd been granted an advantage. Now, truthfully, he was already suspecting this to be someone else's, and they would come reclaim it sooner or later, perhaps with all the goodies it could or would hold.

But somewhere deep down inside, he was even... hoping that it wasn't.

Optimism, if even in vague traces, opposed the pessimism he was trying to adopt as a survival mechanism. For the sake of his own survival, he had to shake it off with a shudder and move along. Just to see how far this would go.

The search continued...

Colbert sniffed around a bit longer. It would be hard, he'd suspected, to pick out those shiny multi-colored stones in this plethora of color. And perhaps he was right, but he wouldn't be able to know it now because his next find, by the kiss of fate, was easy.

A little greenie stone sad under the bridge of an above-ground tree root. Colbert couldn't help but feel a little excitement and joy. Quickly, quickly, he would remind himself that it was likely to be crushed. It shut off the smirk reflex Colbert was about to use, but it couldn't stop the small quiver of excitement that ran down Colbert's spine and into his tail at the next thought: what could be inside this little stone?

Like geodes of knowledge, within every stone held a lesson. Colbert had so far learned two: metalworking, which he didn't really know what to do with considering his lack of resources, and many properties for plants. Those were from purple runestones. This was a green one, and it probably held different knowledge. If he was recalling correctly, purple was the rarest, and thus this green runestone may hold something less valuable.

Perhaps, then, he should store it, and save it for someone else in his newly acquired instrument of object transportation. But... well, what if there was something good inside of it? Something he could use? Colbert, aren't you being a little too optimistic? Don't waste your time! But if he never tried it for himself, he'd never know what kind of knowledge each runestone type had. If he knew that, he'd know which ones to store and, basically, the next level of specifics to keep in mind up from "purple = rare". So, he should just try this one out, shouldn't he?

For the sake of science, Colbert broke the green runestone. Immediately, an interesting lesson popped into his head. A very interesting one.

Cooking. Seasoning. Things correlating to food.

It was interesting because of a combination of meat and plantation that Colbert, an omnivorous fox, would usually be accustomed to -- but this was something else. This was using plants and things, plants Colbert recognized from an earlier runestone lesson, and fire as well, to both cook and flavor the meat. There was also some stuff about broths, and making soups.

Colbert's mind went back to the plants he recognized. Garlic, leeks, onions, and chives were apparently seasonings... but could be toxic to felines and canines in large amounts.

How interesting that was, that plants used for seasonings could also be effectively used for poisons. It never would've been, well, food for thought had Colbert not known both things simultaneously. Strange how he was only now realizing-- perhaps it was all over again, actually-- the power of knowledge. What an unfortunate mistake it would be to not have both, and perhaps use the wrong one for the wrong creature, if one had not known the poisonous properties of some seasonings. Or an even sadder situation, in which the creature being fed could not tell the difference between poison and seasoning, and was thereby poisoned via their meal.

Hm.

What a sad situation indeed. Colbert couldn't help, in this state, but to imagine the death. It wasn't pretty. Immediately, he wanted to mentally look away. He thought about something else. Like how this might be something new to try, at least until he failed at it. Maybe he should practice to keep his differences straight. He could feed some insentient animals some cooked and seasoned meals, to the best of his ability, to see what hurt them and what did not. Well, he could also feed some sentient animals, but he didn't want to hurt any of them when they already hurt enough.

Except Shikikan. He loathed Shikikan. He'd kill Shikikan if only he could. But he wouldn't ask Shikikan to "help him improve" on anything. Not even the fighting the lion so admired in others. Nope. Shikikan was a wretch, less than alive, and Colbert wouldn't ask him for any favors, or any further time to be in his presence. That sounded absolutely disgusting. Now Colbert was going to have to think about something else again.

How about getting more runestones? Yeah. Enough about what was happening in Shison, or about death. Colbert had yet to fail at this other activity. It was actually getting kind of exciting, which could wind up being a problem. He had to kill that excitement before it caused him more heartache.

Ebony legs moved through the terrain in a slow way, Iris was one the plan of just exploring, of allowing herself to open her horizons. And as she walked, her face was adorned by a smile, and a smile that could have many meanings, reasons are hidden within. But, the brownie wolf wasn't too open in that matter, no, she wasn't rude, she just wasnt used to meet many folks. She became solitary, lonely on her travels. Her march continued, she didn't have rush to end with it, no one to return to, nowhere to come back to. At this point, she was on her own, without no one. But it didn't matter anymore, but it still hurt, her family's memory would never fade, it will be there for the rest of her life.

As time passed, eyes of gold landed upon a small but dark figure moving at the distance. Friendly as she is, she aimed to approach, her tail wagged behind her and her ears lowered in warmth. "Hello! What are you doing?" She asked euphorically, as she smiled at the fox. "Mind if i join?" She questioned, as slowly takes a sit. Months passed since she spoke to another person, months since she ever interacted. It wasn't her intention, but at times that was inevitable. Though she wanted to change that, she wanted to be in the company of others, she wanted to help, to aid those in need.

Colbert lost his train of thought in the searching. Runestones, runestones, runestones. In particular, he was looking for red. It'd be good if he could find at least one, just to know what they were about. Then he could continue collecting them knowing their respective worths. That would help him know which ones served what purposes for who. It was like searching for books without covers for a library in progress; you had to know which books said what otherwise you'd never know where to put them, who would need them.

You would also never know which ones to keep... away.

Thinking about that made the little fox cringe uncomfortably. Why did it bother him so much to know what he was doing was wrong? What was wrong about keeping valuable information from the wrong people? 'Who are you to judge 'wrong people', betrayer?' an inner voice fired back. Ah, that's right. Colbert was still wicked, down to the bone, a criminal just like Shikikan. It was horrendous to see that image, him being on par with that foul beast. But in some cases it was true, was it not? Was failing everything he did and failing everyone he met and completely trashing Kimagure's sacred trust and being fine with stealing and cheating and lying any better than what Shikikan did?

'But Kimagure killed Koheina,' another mental voice chimed in. 'That was an execution,' Colbert replied assuredly. 'She deserved it. She was like her father, a dirty, villainous cheat. Shikikan needs to be executed as well. If I screw up again, which is likely to happen eventually, I will deserve the same fate. This is just the way it is. There's nothing to feel bad about here,' he thought with a tone of adamance.

And yet, something about it felt wrong.

Then again, everything felt wrong recently. So maybe it was just alright, and everything that was alright was wrong anyways. How convoluted that was. You know what was really wrong? The fact that, for all his scrounging around, Colbert was finally not finding anything anymore. Was this it? His inevitable failure? It had come so soon, he was almost surprised. It didn't want to milk that budding joy a little longer, just to pour salt in the wounds when he finally, painstakingly failed? Well, perhaps it had already accomplished all of the sweetness it could, having given him a new thing to try... and inevitably fail at. So perhaps it did serve its purpose, and it was just time to end.

Resigning himself rather quickly to this belief, Colbert sighed and shifted around slightly in an attempt to head back to Shison-- and he was met with a stranger's words. A stranger's smell. He looked up and, ah yes, just as he'd feared and suspected, a stranger's face.

This wolf woman was smiling at him, asking him what he was up to, and if she could join. Interesting how she would assume he was up to something she could join in on. Had she actually known what he was doing, or had she just guessed? The only reason it mattered was because one implied that she was stalking him or had somehow watched him prior, and the other implied that she was, well, normal. Innocuous. For now.

The part of Colbert that wanted to vouch for her harmlessness was but a small flame in a strong breeze, endangered and flickering and neighboring death. Even still, the flame was there, and it tormented him so with its inane ideas that maybe this girl really doesn't mean any harm, just wants to be friendly and join in.

Colbert jumped to being wary, as per usual.

"Hello, I was just looking around here for anything of interest. You may join if you'd like, although it's not really much of a cooperative task," Colbert said, in a tone he hoped was polite. Tired as he was, manners weren't really harmful to anyone. The purpose of them was to be the opposite of damaging. Turning around to now continue his search instead of abandon it, Colbert tilted his head back towards the wolf and added on, "My name is Shelley. Who might you be?" Of course, he wouldn't turn his back completely on the stranger. He knew better than that. But he wasn't going to sniff around in the same direction. He didn't think that'd be much help to her own search.

Would she know what to look for? Was she perhaps new to these lands? Colbert would have to wait and find out. He really didn't want to have found another creature instead of a stone, but perhaps that was part of the failure. He couldn't drop out now, could he? Might as well keep it rolling.

Rolling, rolling, rolling 'til it stopped.

"Hello, I was just looking around here for anything of interest. You may join if you'd like, although it's not really much of a cooperative task," Her eyes remained placed upon the fox, paying attention to what he said, and there she wondered what could be there to wake up the man's interest. "And what type of thing would be of interest? I am still kinda new here, i haven't had the opportunity to meet and explore much about this unknown place." She explained as looks around, she didn't know what she should be looking for. "Like treasures?" She asked as starts using her nose to aid in the search of who knows what.

"My name is Shelley. Who might you be?" Shelley? Well it sounded cool, she wanted to tell him but her self control stopped her from doing so, it could be offensive if she wasn't careful. So for the respect's sake, she stood in silence and shallowed the desires to do compliment. "I am Iris RainDrop! A pleasure to meet you!" She answered smiling at him, it reminded her of another fox she met though it was several seasons ago. She could remember the white fox with cape, and she wondered what had been out of him but well she hoped he was all good. Leaving that to aside, she kept looking. The thrill of not knowing what would come out pushed her forward with determination.

Amelia Stark by Split
Winter was a better season for the woman. Her vision was restored, and her head was once more shaped properly rather than a malformed thing. No longer did an extra eye blink unseeingly from her chest. No, she was herself again, and that was enough to let her leave home with caution. She had not forgotten the ousting of the wolf, had not forgotten that she was responsible for Damia's son being kicked out of Salvus. She had not forgotten that she had promised to help the boy - and had then failed to help him.

Her steps took her south, as they always did until she found the forest again. The one she had dug a den out at. The one with the pretty lake. The one she had run into Colbert at, and he had been so worried about her being alone there. Nothing but a sack of bones himself. Had he starved himself to death finally? She wondered this idly if she'd failed him as much as she had Shadow. Her ears flicked, twitching, curious and thoughtful as she walked. Green eyes searched the landscape for anything strange, while at the same time the woman was seeking something, anything like a bag. She really just needed something to keep whatever she found inside.

Her head lifted from watching the ground and ears twitched as she heard voices. For a moment the fox hesitated, unsure if she even wanted to investigate. A plethora of 'what-ifs' crossed the scout's mind, but curiosity still steered her onward. She wanted to go to the lake and stick her paws into the cool water. She wanted to stare at her reflection and marvel at the way the sky framed her head. But no. She had the compelling need to see who was talking.

Oh.

Her steps stopped short. Her head had been lowered, watchful, tail dragging behind her. Now her head came up, tilting to one side slightly. She recognized the fox, though not the wolf he spoke with. There was no tell-tale blue streak down the spine, and the fur was a warm brown, like the earth after a rain. She was a pretty wolf, and Amelia nodded her head slightly as she realized that the wolf was indeed a she. Continuing to run into the same fox over and again was... strange. Once in the rain, where she'd bruised her shoulder and met Kimagure and the nasty hyena Karama with him, and the other little fox as well. Twice in the craters where she met another fox and ruined his cover. Third time even here, with her capturing an owl rather accidentally. And now a fourth time. It was stranger than her friendship with Gabriel, who was so kind and helpful. Who sought out her companionship when Colbert made it clear she was unwelcome. Yet somehow she kept coming across him.

"The Gods must find this amusing," Amelia murmured, ears dropping back against her head. But if it was so amusing to them, then why was she so conflicted about meeting the silver fox again? Colbert seemed nice and that he was still alive against the odds she'd considered the last three months or so was amazing. But even with that in mind she was still uncertain of meeting him again. He had seemed so... forlorn the last time she'd come across him. Her eyes dropped back to the earth, again seeking that stupid satchel she had been trying to find for what felt like a year now. As if it might just jump up and bite her in the fashion she half expected Colbert to come and bite her. Speaking of that, had she even made her presence known? Ears pressed back against her head again, tightly, and she scuffed a paw in the dirt as she thought. She could not yet hear the words passed between the two, and after some hesitation, nose twitching for scents, she made herself perk up. Always perky, always kind, always... what was a good word for her? 'Stupid?' Suggested a voice in the back of her mind still bitter over Shadow's threat of harming her due to her spill in the river.

She wanted to call out a greeting to the two, to pretend as though she was not worried about the other fox, or that it didn't eat her up that she'd gotten Shadow kicked out, or that she wasn't worried about Mitis and the children. She had never had to confront the fact that she was attached to people before, and that in and of itself was strange. She was so used to floating through and by as she had with Damia that it made her squirm a bit to realize she was attached to the Farajas. That they were family. That she loved their children so very much. That she appreciated and enjoyed Gabriel's company. That she cared about the silver fox for some reason - likely because he was another fox and she missed having someone her own size to play with. Her green eyes kept fluttering between the two, feigning as near indifference to the scene as she could.

And of course, she was still trying to see if she could spot a satchel since it seemed even Colbert had now managed to get his paws on one. After a moment, though, of looking back and forth and hesitating, the fox stepped back. One. Two. Three steps. She shook her head with a frown and turned, heading off back toward the lake. No, better not to make a fool of herself again.

The wolf quickly revealed that she was new here, as Colbert had hoped she would do. She essentially, without knowing it, had asked for a lesson about runestones, which Colbert had almost all the resources to give. It would be nice if he could find that third type, red, but nothing was showing up yet. He didn't know how much he wanted to say. Should he still be vague? Should he just give her the knowledge she desired... the knowledge she deserved? Did she deserve it? Goodness, there was no safe way to navigate these waters, not when everyone's minds were stuck in their heads, unreadable, unknowable, unless...

Unless...

Colbert swiveled around towards the wolf woman and, facing her, attempted tp walk by her. His tail, feeling a jolt of disobedience, would attempt to accidentally brush the wolf's fur. Colbert was trying to play it off like he was just searching in another direction, and he could, but he was also trying to set himself up to use the abilities he knew he had. He remembered that ugly squirming feeling that would come to him, and after that, the knowledge he often gained about others. He didn't know how it worked yet, for it didn't always work as it planned, if he recalled correctly.

With his will, if all his motions were allowed, he would attempt to activate the power of #Peruse to read the strongest intentions and emotions of those within a 10-foot radius of him. If his accidental tail brush against the wolf was successful, he would just as accidentally attempt to activate the power of #Portend, to gain a better understanding of her skills and abilities.

Colbert felt that squirming feeling again. Something squirming away from him, something he wanted back but was too far away to reach for. He felt it doubly so, for some reason. Perhaps it increased with each usage? It wouldn't help with the awkwardness of having purposelessly brushed against her, if that's what he had ended up doing. Twitching hard and giving his head a quick shake to get off that feeling, Colbert would hear her give her name: Iris Raindrop. Interesting. And then, finally, he would give her an answer. "Iris Raindrop is a lovely name," he would say, both meaning it and attempting to be polite. He liked it, it obviously reminded him of rain, and the coldness of rain. "And what I mean by 'interesting things' is stones, Miss Iris. This land has some intriguing stones," he would clarify. A half-truth, but now where to go with it? Would she go and look for them herself? Did he want to convince her to waste her time by looking for regular old stones? Again, did she deserve the knowledge?

He would have to wait and see. He had allowed that wormy feeling to eat at him in the hopes it'd give him a clue. He would clarify even further, of course, on these 'intriguing stones', once he knew he wouldn't be giving something valuable away to a potential enemy.

He had to hurry up and find a red one, he had to know what they held. He would keep looking around in this new direction, feeling the pressure of a social situation sitting right upon his back.

OC: Cloudy you can allow Colbert to have succeeded with his accidental touch to Iris, which would allow him to use #Portend. If Iris moves out of his 10-foot radius of the use of #Peruse, he won't be able to use that on her either. You may check the Vampiric Magic Guide to know what those powers do, if you didn't already. :3

Also Amelia's past presence was not acknowledged because Colbert 1.) is distracted and 2.) didn't notice her as she never outright approached.

Extended Signature:

Equipment:
1.) As of 2-8-2019, 10:46 PM [Pied Piper Event]: Colbert wears a little lily-shaped stud earring with a softly glowing pearl-esque orb in the lily's pistil on the outer part of the base of his left ear, with the lily facing towards his front so that all approaching Colbert from the front may see it. It should be assumed Colbert is wearing this earring in the aforementioned way unless stated otherwise.
2.) As of 7-29-2019, 5:35 PM [The Basics Thread]: Colbert wears a leather satchel that fits him quite well -- it does not drag on the ground or hinder his movement all that much. It is often dirty, but one can see that it has floral engravings all across the front flap. It is rectangular in shape, and can carry an average amount of items. It should be assumed Colbert is wearing this satchel unless stated otherwise.
